Where have I been?

As some of you know, we here at Tropist Media are not only a blog but also a startup company. We’ve been working tirelessly for the last couple of months and are getting close to launching our new product. Unfortunately, my time to work on the Tropist Weblog has been lost in the crossfire.

But, I’m back. I won’t be as consistent as before, but hopefully I’ll be more poignant. This means I’m still on the lookout for interesting stuff. If you come across something you think I’d like, feel free to shoot me an email and I’ll probably feature it. Look for new posts starting tomorrow!

In other news, we are looking for a killer web designer! If you do unbelievably easy and gorgeous UI design, shoot me an email, I’d love to talk.

Wow. The portfolio for make-up artist Filippa Smedhagend Sund features one of the most innovative and stunning interfaces I’ve ever seen. Filippa’s work is showcased in unbelievable gorgeous photos and an incredibly unique interface.

Using Filippa’s portfolio is as simple as grab-and-pull with your mouse. In an instant you’ll see how engaging and effective it is to interact with photos in this way. The website was designed in Flash by Mocoro, a Berlin-based web design shop. Check them out for other innovative designs.

Will Ferrell Must be Funny or He Will Die

The Landlord

Will Ferrell’s new comedy video site, Funny or Die, is tearing up the charts. Funny or Die is designed to act as a sieve: poorly rated videos ‘die’ and highly rated videos survive. The goal is to end up with a site filled with genuinely funny content. The concept is nothing new, but the site does have a niche focus and a big name behind it. It’s unfortunate that it’s so hideously designed — the graphics are atrocious and the layout is bloated.

Funny or Die‘s rapid rise in popularity can be attributed to its featured short, The Landlord, a hilarious video featuring Will Ferrell. Some of the other videos on the site are funny, but I could only stand to watch for a few minutes before the design made me feel sick. Now if Will Ferrell started a videoblog, that’s something I could get behind.

Completely Inane Commercial

This commercial is terrible (and hilarious).

The “CGI” featured in the “crash sequence” is atrocious. This is a great example of how to solve a problem without using any creativity. They wanted an explosion but ended up with an embarrassing mess.

To accompany their commercial, Sleep Center of the Southwest also has a stunning website, that is a must-see for all web designers.
