Usability Upgrade

February 16, 2007

In an ongoing effort to improve usability, we recently overhauled the menu design in the My Account section on Tropist.

The old design was pretty standard: menu on top and sub-menu on the left.

Old design — pretty standard really

The old design worked well enough, but there were two problems with it that we knew we could fix. The first was that it required two clicks to access many of the pages. The second was that if you’re new to the site and it’s not obvious to you where a particular sub-menu item might be located, you have to click through all the menu items in order to find it.

So after some sketching and a few prototypes, we arrived at this:

Click the image for a demo of the new menu.

When you drag your mouse over a menu item, the sub-menu items automatically appear underneath it. It’s now really easy to flip through all the options and you can get anywhere with only one click. Give it a spin and let us know what you think.
